From Belgium we are moving to Germany where our British correspondent, Spooky Milner, attended yesterday’s LP’s concert at Jazzopen Stuttgart. Here’s Bekki’s account: “Heavens were opened in Stuttgart. The weather had struggled to make up it’s mind all day, and another storm rolled in just as we were let in to the venue at 5pm.”
“I’m not sure anything else would make me stand in the rain for an hour, so wet my hands wouldn’t dry and my finger tips pruned like I’d spent too long in the bath. Did I mention I’m afraid of thunder storms? Luckily the first act drowned out most of the thunder, and the venue handed out rain ponchos to the front rows. I survived the first thunderstorm I can remember where I wasn’t hiding in a cupboard with headphones on.”
“The set started slightly ahead of schedule. The rain stopped (if only for a brief moment) and we basked in the glow that is LP singing live. Soaked to the skin, willingly drowning in LPs voice song by song. Dreamcatcher caught us all up in it’s strings. Rolling on through When We’re High, Dreamer, When I’m Over You, No Witness /Sex is on Fire and The Power.”
“The sky grew dark again, clouds rolling in from behind us. “This is gonna seperate the men from the boys and the women from the girls” LP said, as Tightrope began, referring to the incoming downpour. LP in the rain is a whole other level of magic. There’s something so elemental and raw about it, and several times I had to turn my face skywards to feel the rain on my skin, in awe.”
“The sound started to cut out towards the end – I’m unsure if it was down to the weather – but LP carried on, nothing was going to end this show prematurely. One Night In the Sun in a torrential downpour, again the power outing a couple of times, only for the crowd to cheer their support. We’re here for you, we don’t care what happens, we’re not going anywhere.”
“Girls Go Wild still had us dancing, and the smile on LPs face only encouraged us more. LP said recently how seeing us have a good time gets her going and you could see that happening tonight. So much that even though it wasn’t on the set list, at the end of Girls Go Wild LP shouted to the band to do the new medley cover, You Shook Me All Night Long.”
“Not gonna lie here, I’d been unsure of this cover, poor audio recordings from previous shows maybe, I wasn’t yet sold on it. Maybe I couldn’t hear the arrangement very well when I’d watched it on Instagram and it wasn’t working for me. Until I heard it live in Stuttgart. I had nothing to worry about, LP owns this song like she wrote it.”
“My main music interest is rock, and I tell you what, I would LOVE to see LP perform this with AC/DC. Hey Brian Johnson, hook that up. It would be wild. At some point LP announced if we have to go through it (the rain) then so will she. Even though we later found out LP is sick at the moment, it didn’t show as she stomped around the stage, jumping in puddles to make us scream in delight.”
“House on Fire in to Paint it Black (still more swagger than Mick Jagger) and Other People. The transitions still give me chills! I’ll miss this trio when it’s retired (I hope that’s a long time off!). LP improvised the lyrics during the Bridge of Other People, changing them to “thank you baby, oh thank you babe, oh for standing in the rain, standing in the rain”,
“and then so appropriately “danke shone, darling danke schone, oh it’s such a rain, its fun and – whatever the fuck I said” (or something like this at the end, lol). Shaken – while less spins and skipping due to the puddles – had us all partying in the rain again – with just a little disappointment as straight after, the intro music to Lost on You started (which is an awesome bit of music by the way, can someone give me a copy of that).”
“A sign that it was nearly the end of the show, and as wet as we were we didn’t want to leave yet. With the rain bouncing off the stage and the lights and the music, with LP pouring her heart out and Alex pounding his guitar like his life depended on it, I got caught during the solo in some kind of “I never want this moment to end” feeling, so powerful and playful the band and LP were right then.”
“Just as we’d soaked up the water, we soaked up every last note, every last “is that Lost on you?” to take with us as we headed out of the venue. Thank you to LP, Lauren and the management team for coming out to some very damp fans after the show. We all appreciate it so so much, and thanks LP for my birthday wishes. I’ve been so lucky, three years running, my birthday gift has been you and your music.”
“Who could want for more? Stuttgart, you were beautiful. Wet, but beautiful.” As always, Bekki thanks for everything, and one more time – Happy Birthday! And a few more quotes. @lp_cz_fan: “IF YOU CAN DEAL WITH IT, I CAN DEAL WITH IT!! – LP about that crazy rain, thank you for giving us as much as you can!!”
